A dog’s coat is composed of two layers: a top coat of stiff guard hairs that help repel water and shield from dirt, and an undercoat of soft down hairs, to serve as insulation.
Dogs with both under coat and top coat are said to have a dry coat, while dogs with only the top layer of guard hair are called a wet coat. Dogs that are both dry and wet at the same time are referred to as dry-wet hybrids.
The term “hybrid” is also used to refer to dogs that have both top and under coats, but are not classified as either dry or wet.

How many hairs are on a cat?
The average cat has around 40 million hairs on it’s body. That’s a lot of hairs, but it’s not enough to make up for the fact that a cat’s body is covered in fur. We did this by counting the number of hair follicles in each cat, and then dividing that number by the total body length of the cat.
(For comparison, a human hair is about 0.1 millimeters in length.) We then used this number to estimate the amount of body hair on cats in order to get an idea of their average body size, which we called the “body hair index” (BHI).
The higher the BHI, the more hair you have on your body—and the smaller the size of your cat will be when you compare it to other cats of similar size.
